Sleep is the Best Form of Recovery

James Hume's Journey Back to Peak Performance

"Sleep is the best form of recovery," says James Hume, the 26-year-old Ulster Rugby star who has made 99 appearances for Ulster and 3 for Ireland. After suffering a ruptured ACL and torn meniscus in 2024, James discovered what many elite athletes are only now realising: optimal sleep isn't just important - it's essential for peak performance and recovery.

From Injury to Recovery Revolution
James's injury became a turning point. During his rehabilitation process, he placed massive emphasis on recovery through multiple channels—ice baths, targeted supplementation, and most crucially, optimising his sleep environment. "The importance of optimal sleep has only come to the forefront in the last few years," James explains, "but once you experience the difference, there's no going back."

The Professional's Sleep Protocol
James has developed a precise routine to maximize his recovery:

  • Blue light glasses to reduce screen impact
  • Targeted supplementation: "My top three sleep hacks in no particular order would be supplementation before bed. So magnesium, add a sleep blend and zinc."
  • Room temperature optimization
  • Optimum darkness with BlocOut blinds

The last point is especially important; "A pitch black room, definitely," James emphasizes when discussing his sleep essentials. The transformation was immediate: "With BlocOut blinds I'm asleep within 5-10 minutes, before it would have taken way longer."

Measurable Results
James tracks his sleep using a Whoop band, providing concrete data on his improvements: "As a professional athlete, I obviously want to maximise my recovery in all areas and I've been tracking my sleep using the Whoop band and I've noticed a significant difference since I've got these BlocOut blinds and I've maximised everything to do with my sleep routine that my scores have went up and my REM sleep's increased and I'm just generally feeling better day to day now."

Pitch Performance
The connection between sleep quality and athletic performance is undeniable in James's experience. "A proper night's sleep definitely helps you prepare for a game in the best way possible," he notes. The benefits extend beyond physical recovery: "I know when I sleep better, I perform better, my mental clarity is better."

Why Sleep Matters for Muscle Repair
For James, sleep is particularly crucial for muscle repair and growth—essential factors in his ACL recovery journey. During deep sleep phases, the body releases growth hormone, repairs damaged tissue, and consolidates the physical adaptations from training.

James's Recommendation

"I would recommend BlocOut blinds to anybody who wants to improve their quality of sleep," James states. His endorsement comes from personal experience and measurable results: "I would highly recommend BlocOut blinds to anyone who's looking to improve their sleep or maximise recovery."

The Universal Application

While James is a professional athlete, he believes "optimal sleep is important for everyone." Whether you're recovering from injury, training for competition, or simply seeking better health, the principles remain the same.
